At least 35 dead as bridge collapses near Genoa

A motorway bridge collapsed near the Italian city of Genoa on August 14

MOSCOW, August 14./TASS/. The death toll in the collapse of a motorway bridge near Genoa has grown to 35, La Repubblica newspaper says referring to the Italian National Civil Protection Service.

Earlier, Interior Minister Matteo Salvini reported 30 deaths in the tragedy.

"We fear that the number of people killed and injured will grow, as work to clear the debris from the collapsed section of the bridge continues," the newspaper cited Head of the Civil Protection Department Angelo Borrelli as saying.

According to La Repubblica, official data puts the number of fatalities at 35, including a child. The number of those injured stands at the moment at 14, five of them are in critical condition.

A bridge near Genoa, built on the A10 motorway, collapsed on Tuesday morning. According to Rai News 24 television channel, there were 35 personal cars and three trucks on the bridge when it collapsed. A rescue operation continues.

Images and video footage from the site showed flattened cars under concrete wreckage. The collapsed section mostly fell onto rail tracks below, but debris also hit nearby houses.

Condolences over the tragedy have already come from French President Emmanuel Macron, Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis. In particular, President Macron said France was ready to offer all necessary assistance to deal with the tragedy.
