"I have requested the central government to declare a national disaster in connection with the developments," he said. According to updated reports, "381 people were killed, more than 1,000 were injured, and about 670 of them very seriously," the governor added. According to him, more than 270,000 local residents had to flee their homes.

The northern part of the island is the hardest hit.

According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center, a 6.6 magnitude earthquake rocked the Lombok Island on Sunday. The epicenter of the tremors was located 49 km northeast of the city of Mataram, which has a population of 319,000. The seismic center was 10 km deep. A tsunami warning was issued, which was lifted on Monday.
