Kola mining company stops melting shop in ecology action

A brief suspension of the melting equipment would not affect the production cycle, according to the company

MURMANSK, December 1. /TASS/. The Kola Mining and Metallurgical Company (Kola MMC, a part of Nornickel) under the "Zero Negative Impact on the Environment" Campaign on December 2 will stop for one day the melting shop, the company’s press service said on Friday, adding the ecology action is organized with support of the regional Ministry of Natural Resources and Ecology.

The campaign’s organizers are inviting the regional enterprises to join the campaign and cut industrial emissions by a brief stop, if this is possible technologically. According to the metallurgical company, a brief suspension of the melting equipment would not affect the production cycle. The company has planned the campaign so that this stop could be used for servicing the metallurgical shop.

The Kola MMC participates regularly in the "Zero Negative Impact on the Environment" Campaign, which is a direction of the company’s ecology activities.

The Kola Mining and Metallurgical Company is a leading production complex in the Murmansk region as a major producer of non-ferrous metals, including strategic metals. The company is the world’s biggest nickel refining enterprise and Russia’s only producer of electrolytic cobalt of highest grades. Kola MMC produces 39% of nickel and 42% of cobalt the Norilsk Nickel Company produces. The products are supplied to the domestic market and exported to European countries.
