Ice production resumes at Murmansk fishing port

The Murmansk Marine Fishing Port put operational a chip ice facility

MURMANSK, November 23. /TASS/. The Murmansk Marine Fishing Port put operational a chip ice facility, the port’s press service said on Wednesday. Previously, ice production was at the port only in the Soviet times.

"The ice plant, which used to work at the port, was closed back in the Soviet times," the press service quoted the port’s representative Yuri Zagursky as saying. "With development of fish production in the Polar area, the fishers wanted to have ice available here."

Germany’s ZIEGRA ice generator produces ten tonnes of chip ice a day. The system uses tap water, which passes three stages of purification. Investments in the equipment made 15 million rubles ($257 thousand).

Earlier, the fishers working in the coastal zone and delivering fish to the port, had to use ice of poor quality. Trawlers bring fish to the Murmansk port about 500 times a year.
