Russian PM calls selection, genetics and seed industry priority tasks in agribusiness

The premier calls the support of genetics and seed farming one of priorities for the agricultural complex

SCHETINKA SETTLEMENT, August 22. /TASS/. Selection, genetics and seed farming are priorities for Russian agribusiness, Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said on Monday.

"Task number one across the country is to support the production of selective production, genetics, and seed farming. They recently turn into priorities for the development of agriculture," Medvedev said. The problem with seed supply has been around for a long time and it is a national security issue, he added.

Russia needs to develop domestic technologies in seed industry, Medvedev said. "I hope agribusinesses and lay gardeners will receive in coming years normal seeds adapted to our weather conditions. Concerning the border control and compliance with sanitary and phytosanitary requirements, I agree that [supplies of poor quality seeds - TASS] is a threat to food security and it should be controlled," Medvedev said.

"We need to make a transition to domestic technologies. We will definitely deal with that," he added.
