Salmon fishing banned in north Russia's Murmansk

Such a move is caused by mass deaths among Atlantic salmon in the region's waters

MURMANSK, August 14. /TASS/. Authorities in Murmansk, north Russia, have banned salmon fishing following mass deaths among Atlantic salmon in the region's waters, officials told TASS on Friday.

"The Fishing committee has halted amateur and sportive salmon catching," a statement said, adding that river basins and waters around the Kola Peninsula were under restrictions to protect stocks of a species unique to peninsula and Icelandic waters.

No precise cause of the deaths has been identified. Disease caused mass fatalities 40 years ago — this time, say veterinary experts, an abnormally cold summer may be responsible.
