European Commission to explore EU cooperation with Eurasian Economic Union

STRASBOURG, September 18. /ITAR-TASS/. The European Parliament has advised the European Commission to “explore the modalities of EU cooperation with the Eurasian Economic Union”.

In a resolution on the situation in Ukraine and the EU’s relations with Russia adopted at a full-scale session in Strasbourg, the European legislators noted the importance “to take a proactive role in facilitating dialogue between Ukraine and Russia, as well as the EU’s dialogue with Russia, and in promoting peaceful solutions to conflicts.”

The Eurasian Economic Union, which envisages the free movement of goods, services, capital and workforce and is based on the Customs Union of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan, will become operational from January 1, 2015.

A treaty to create the union was signed by presidents of Russia, Kazakhstan and Belarus Vladimir Putin, Nursultan Nazarbayev and Alexander Lukashenko in Astana on May 29.
