EU urges Kiev to closely coordinate gas transit from Russia

BRUSSELS, August 15. /ITAR-TASS/. European Union urged “close Ukraine-EU coordination” in Russian gas transit issues, the EU Council said in an official statement after an extraordinary meeting of European foreign ministers.

“The EU Council urges the Kiev authorities to closely coordinate with the European Commission any actions regarding the transportation of Russian gas, as these actions may threaten energy supplies to Europe”, the statement said, stressing that supplies’ safety is of major importance for the EU.

The Council believes that Ukrainian gas transportation system needs modernization to guarantee safe gas delivery through the country’s territory.

This statement actually confirms earlier reports by ITAR-TASS saying that the EU started looking for potential foreign investors that could partially buy Ukraine’s gas transport system and raise funds for its modernization.
