Ukrainian president sets task to reduce electricity price for consumers

KIEV, December 20. /ITAR-TASS/. President Viktor Yanukovich has set the task to reduce electricity price for consumers.

“Easing of electricity will be the base for further modernisation and economic development in Ukraine,” Yanukovich said at a meeting devoted to Energy Day on Friday.

“The talks are aimed at reducing the price of Russian natural gas. We managed to do this,” the president said.

“The gas price (268.5 dollars per 1,000 cubic metres) will allow Ukraine to save expenditures on electricity and heating,” he said.

Ukraine has a powerful energy system, which develops permanently. “Energy facilities give jobs to about 180,000 people and the price for electricity and heating is one fourth of the country’s GDP,” Yanukovich said, adding that despite the economic crisis, new energy generating facilities were being put into operation in the country.
