Russia, Latvia Chambers of Commerce to talk on green corridor

The cross border capacity is still a very important issue in relations between the two countries

RIGA, February 7 (Itar-Tass) – The Chambers of Commerce and Industry (CCI) of Russia and Latvia will discuss in Moscow on Thursday the creation of the “green corridor” on the border between the two countries for transit traffic, President of Latvian CCI Gundars Strautmanis said.

“During the visit, we will meet with the leaders and members of the Russian Chamber of Commerce to find out what changes are expected in the cooperation between the two countries after Russia’s accession to the World Trade Organisation (WTO), and within the framework of the Customs Union - changes in the procedure of border crossing, tariff policy and other spheres,” Strautmanis told reporters.

According to him, the cross border capacity is still a very important issue in relations between the two countries. To solve the problem of long queues on the border between Latvia and Russia it is necessary to create a “green corridor” for motor carriers.

A delegation of 11 members of the Latvian Chamber of Commerce and Industry led by mayor of Riga Nil Ushakov will visit the Russian capital on February 7-8. During the visit, they will meet with representatives of the Samara Region, entrepreneurs of the construction industry, as well as will discuss in the Moscow mayor’s office the organisation of joint events.

The Riga mayor said in an interview with Itar-Tass that the organisation of trade fairs for Latvian producers will be discussed during the visit. “Specialised stands of the products made in Riga and Latvia – the Riga Yard - can work on a permanent basis under the contracts and agreements with retail chains where it is necessary to ensure regular supplies. The fair is a completely different format in which major manufacturers, which even if they get into large Moscow trade networks, will not be able to provide the necessary volume. And at the fair they will be able to show themselves, and this is very important. Belarus at such fairs in Moscow earns billions of dollars each year. It is very important for us to organise the first pilot fair, and during the visit we will specify the date of the fair,” the mayor said.
