Yanukovich says fines under Russian gas supply contract disputable

He said Ukraine and Russia have agreed to continue the talks

VILNIUS, February 6 (Itar-Tass) – Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich, who is in Lithuania on a visit, said Gazprom’s fines announced for Ukraine’s failure to take less Russian natural gas than was required by the contract are “disputable”.

“We think these fines do not correspond to market relations between business entities and are disputable,” Yanukovich said.

“We gave our answer to Gazprom that these fines [of 7 billion U.S. dollars] are unfair,” Yanukovich added.

He said Ukraine and Russia have agreed to continue the talks.
