Cost of project to build football stadium in St Petersburg, which will host several matches of the FIFA World Cup, can be reduced

MOSCOW, January 15 (Itar-Tass) — The cost of the project to build a football stadium in St. Petersburg, which will host the matches of the FIFA World Cup-2018, can be reduced by 10 billion roubles, Chairman of the Russian Audit Chamber Sergei Stepashin said on Tuesday.

“It is needed to divide clearly the cost of a football stadium and such infrastructure as hotels and restaurants that are to be built near the sport complex. They should be built from the private investments. Major funds can be saved in this issue,” Stepashin noted.

“It should be realized that this is an exclusive project, but there should be several sources for its financing. It cannot be admitted any way that the funds intended for the construction of the stadium will be spent for the construction of other facilities,” he said.

Stepashin confirmed that according to the inspection of the Russian Audit Chamber 14.417.4 million roubles were spent, the stadium has been built by 34.4% so far.

“The cost of the construction of a new football stadium on the Krestovsky Island, which will host several matches of the FIFA World Cup, will reach 43.8 billion roubles. Meanwhile, 14 billion roubles, which were already spent for the construction of the stadium, were included in this sum,” the St. Petersburg authorities told Itar-Tass before.
