MOSCOW, January 11 (Itar-Tass) – The Russian Audit Chamber exposed over 700 billion roubles worth of violations and defects in 2012.
A total of 2.1 billion roubles were recovered, Audit Chamber Head Sergei Stepashin said in an interview with Rossiiskaya Gazeta published on Friday, January 11.
Based on the results of the audits, 70 criminal cases were opened, more than 400 administrative cases were initiated against officials of different levels of government, and 20 high-ranking civil servants were dismissed.
The Audit Chamber also exposed 102 billion roubles worth of violations in the procurement system last year. “We have recently created a special inspectorate for contract auditing and this bore fruit. For example, following a joint audit of the Zenit Arena Stadium construction budget conducted by the Audit Chamber and St. Petersburg’s Control and Audit Chamber, its cost was reduced considerably,” Stepashin said.
Speaking of public procurements, he recalled that an agreement had been signed with business ombudsman Boris Titov last year. The document empowers him to initiate the Audit Chamber’s probes into improper performance of public contracts.
