Russia positioned for renewable energy breakthrough in 2036 — Novak

According to the deputy prime minister, over the last 10 years, Russia has been able to increase the capacity of its renewable energy facilities to 6 GW

MOSCOW, April 2. /TASS/. Russia’s renewable energy industry will be a force to be reckoned with domestically and internationally starting in 2036, Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak wrote in an article for Energy Policy magazine.

In 2021, the government initiative to fund and develop renewable energy was extended and improved, he noted, adding that its goals include not only encouraging the commissioning of new facilities, but also gradually reducing the cost of energy generated at green energy facilities.

"We expect the sector to become fully competitive on the domestic and global markets starting in 2036," Novak wrote.

Over the last 10 years, Russia has been able to up the capacity of its renewable energy facilities to 6 GW, he said, adding that the plan is to boost this number to 20 GW by 2035.

There are renewable sources of energy in 58 regions across Russia. Meanwhile, renewable energy is already being used widely in a number of regions, including in the Stavropol Region, Crimea, the Rostov and Astrakhan Regions, as well as the Kalmykia Region.
