South Korea to restrict supply of goods to Russia starting from February 24

The "high probability" that some items may be used for military purposes was cited as the grounds for expanding South Korea’s trade restrictions

SEOUL, February 20. /TASS/. Restrictions on supplies of 682 different types of goods from South Korea to Russia will take effect on February 24, the South Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy said.

Republic of Korea authorities announced such restrictions against Russia and Belarus on December 26. The ministry said at that time that the new rules would take effect in early 2024. They limit supplies of heavy construction machinery, rechargeable batteries, aviation component parts, and autos with an engine displacement of over 2,000 cubic centimeters.

The "high probability" that such items may be used for military purposes was cited as the grounds for expanding South Korea’s trade restrictions. The ban on supplies will be a general rule but the relevant authorities can issue formal permits to allow specific exceptions after reviewing and approving relevant applications.

Seoul’s export control list will be expanded to cover a total of 1,159 kinds of goods starting from February 24.
