Container carrier traffic in Red Sea plummeting in early January — FT

Cargo ships are being redirected along the Cape of Good Hope because of the threat of attacks

LONDON, January 10. /TASS/. The number of container ships in the Red Sea fell by 90% during the first week of January in annual terms because of attacks by Yemen’s Houthi rebels, The Financial Times (FT) reports.

"The number of container ships at the mouth of the Red Sea on their way to or from the Suez Canal was 90 per cent down in the first week of January compared with the start of 2023," the newspaper said, citing a report by Clarksons, a UK-based shipping company.

Cargo ships are being redirected along the Cape of Good Hope because of the threat of attacks.

On January 9, 2024, there were 364 container ships on this route, which is almost 2.5 times more than on December 21, 2023.
