Cable damage in Gulf of Finland not affecting Rostelecom operations — company

According to the press service, data transmission was organized along land routes

MOSCOW, November 7. /TASS/. Communications between the Kaliningrad Region and the remaining part of Russia are functioning normally and the incident at the subsea fiber-optic communication line from Kingisepp to Kaliningrad has not affected operations of communications infrastructure, the press service of Russia’s Rostelecom told TASS.

The press service of the Finland’s Economy Ministry informed that the Baltica communication cable of Rostelecom in the economic zone of Finland had been found to be damaged in the Gulf of Finland. The cable damage in the area was registered on October 7, and the cable damage point is at 28 km from the damaged segment of the Balticconnector gas pipeline.

"Communications between the Kaliningrad Region and the remaining part of Russia are functioning normally. The incident at the subsea fiber-optic communication line from Kingisepp to Kaliningrad has not affected operations of communications infrastructure and provision of services to users in the region - data transmission was organized along land routes, and backup satellite communication channels are also in place," Rostelecom said.

Company’s functions initiated planning and preparation of recovery work after receiving information about the incident, Rostelecom said.

"On November 5, the Spasatel Karev specialized ship started recovery operations. The provisional timeframe is ten business days, depending on weather conditions. Work completion will be communicated further," the press service added.
