Hainan authorities stop issuing permits for bulk work in the offshore area

There are 68 bays on Hainan

HAIKOU, August 3. /TASS/. In order to protect the environment and preserve the natural landscape, the Hainan administration completely ceases to issue licenses for carrying out bulk works in the water area along the coastline of the island, reported www.hinews.cn

According to the newspaper, this decision was made on the basis of a regional strategy for environmental protection during the fourteenth five-year plan (2021-2025). As the local authorities have assured, they will exercise control over the construction activities of the companies "as strictly" as possible. The exception will be large state infrastructure projects of strategic importance.

In addition, the government will begin cleaning water and rehabilitating the environment in eight bays on Hainan. The natural state of 19 sea bays, with the support of the state, is expected to be significantly improved in the coming years so that they meet the highest criteria and receive the status of exemplary natural objects. According to the official plan, by 2025, 12 of them should appear in the first lines of the ranking of China's cleanest and most well-groomed harbors.

It is expected that this program will subsequently be significantly expanded to cover all coastal areas of the province. Key challenges include restoring mangrove forests, algae and coral reefs. At the same time, all buildings erected in violation of the law or negatively affecting the environment will be demolished on the sea coast. Moreover, the authorities will introduce in four cities along the perimeter of the island (Haikou, Sanya, Wenchang and Danzhou in the north, south, east and west of Hainan) a pilot system for the collection and disposal of garbage, brought by the waves of the South China Sea from time to time.

According to statistics, about 60% of the world's population lives in a strip no more than 100 km from the sea, which plays a key role in the development of the global economy, since it is a rich source of transport, tourism, agricultural and fossil resources. Bays are the main part of the seascape suitable for economic activities. Therefore, among the important tasks requiring urgent solutions and constant monitoring is the protection of the environment and the prevention of erosion of the coastline, which is greatly destroyed not only by typhoons, but also by humans.

There are 68 bays on Hainan, 40% of them are concentrated in three cities - in the resort city of Sanya, in Wenchang (northeast) and in Wanning (southeast), however, the most promising deep-water port of the island, adapted for the needs of super-large transcontinental container ships, is located in a bay in the northwest of the province near the city of Danzhou.
