China seeks Russian gas supplies beyond contract volume, Gazprom CEO says

In 2019, Gazprom plans to invest $2.2 bln in the Power of Siberia gas pipeline, which is designed to transport gas from East Siberia deposits to the domestic market and for export to China

YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK, April 28. /TASS/. China is showing interest in Russian gas supplies beyond the volume envisaged by a contract between Gazprom and the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), the Russian energy giant’s CEO Alexei Miller said in an interview with the program "Moscow. Kremlin. Putin" on Rossiya-1 TV channel.

"Our Chinese partners are showing great interest in increasing the supplies beyond the volume, which we outlined in the 30-year contract," Miller said.

In 2019, Gazprom plans to invest 147.53 bln rubles ($2.2 bln) in the Power of Siberia gas pipeline, which is designed to transport gas from East Siberia deposits to the domestic market and for export to China.

Last year, investments in the gas pipeline project reached 219.04 bln rubles ($3.3 bln), and in 2017 this figure was to the tune of 158.8 bln rubles ($2.4 bln). The overall price tag of the project was estimated at 799.9 bln rubles ($12.3 bln) in 2011.

Earlier, the Gazprom CEO said the gas pipeline’s construction had been ahead of schedule and Gazprom would start its supplies to China on December 1, 2019.

In May 2014, Gazprom and the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) signed a sales and purchase agreement for gas to be supplied via the ‘eastern route’ (Power of Siberia gas pipeline). The 30-year agreement provides for Russian gas deliveries to China in the amount of 38 bln cubic meters per year.
