Greece backs construction of TurkStream gas pipeline

SALONIKI /Greece/, April 18. /TASS./ Greece supports the construction of the TurkStream gas pipeline and any other Russian gas supply routes, Dimitrios Velanis, special adviser to the Prime Minister of Greece on relations with Russia and the countries of Eastern Europe, said in an interview with Russian journalists.

On Thursday, the Greek city of Thessaloniki hosted the 12th session of the Russian-Greek commission on economic, industrial and scientific-technical cooperation. Velanis coordinates the work of the commission.

"We support "Turkish Stream" and any other routes of Russian gas, as well as the participation of Russian energy companies in Greece, "he said stressed that energy is the most important area of bilateral cooperation between Russia and Greece in general.

The advisor to the Greek Prime Minister noted that the participation of Greece in the TurkStream project remains a relevant topic.

"This topic is always on the agenda," he stressed. Velanis recalled that during a visit to Moscow in December 2018, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras voiced support for the construction of a gas pipeline through Greece to Italy and other European countries.

The TurkStream project envisages the construction of a gas pipeline across the Black Sea to the European part of Turkey and farther to the border with Greece. Gas deliveries via the first stretch of the gas pipeline are meant to meet the requirements of the growing Turkish market, while the second stretch is planned to deliver gas to the countries of Southern and South-Eastern Europe. Gazprom considers Greece, Italy, Bulgaria, Serbia and Hungary potential markets.
