Moscow Court fines Facebook for refusal to furnish information

The social network representatives were duly notified but did not arrive at the court session

MOSCOW, April 12. /TASS/. The judicial district of the Justice of the Peace No. 422 in Moscow’s Tagansky District imposed a 3,000-ruble ($47) fine on Facebook within the administrative case framework for refusal of the social network to furnish information regarding localization of personal data of Russian users in Russia, TASS reports from the court room.

"The foreign legal entity Facebook to be recognized as the guilty party under Article 19.7 of the Russian Code of Administrative Offenses (Failure to furnish data or information) and an administrative fine of three thousand rubles ($47) to be imposed on it," Judge Anton Kozyrev said.

The social network representatives were duly notified but did not arrive at the court session.

The court earlier made a similar decision in respect of Twitter and imposed the fine of 3,000 rubles ($47 on it).

The Russian telecom and media watchdog Roskomnadzor prepared an administrative protocol against Facebook in connection with the failure to furnish information about localization of Russian users’ personal data in the territory of Russia, the regulator’s press service told reporters in February.

The document was sent to the justice of the peace within the timeframe set by the Code to decide on administrative liability. The Russian regulator sent the request to Facebook in December 2018.

Under the Russian law on personal data, which took effect on September 1, 2015, national and foreign companies are obliged to keep and process personal data of Russian users in the territory of Russia.
