Rusal completes construction of the deepest mine nationwide

The Russian aluminum producer initiated construction of the Cheremukhovskaya - Glubokaya mine eleven years ago

EKATERINBURG, April 2. /TASS/. The Russian aluminum producer Rusal completed construction of the Cheremukhovskaya - Glubokaya mine in its pit in Severouralsk. Investments into the bauxite mine construction totaled over 7.9 bln rubles ($120.6 mln) in eleven years, Rusal’s press service in the Ural Federal District reports on Tuesday.

"The Severouralsky Bauxite Pit commissioned the final, the third stage of the Cheremukhovskaya - Glubokaya mine. Investments into the startup facility amounted to about 460 mln rubles ($7 mln). Total investments into construction of the Cheremukhovskaya - Glubokaya mine were over 7.9 bln rubles ($120.6 mln)," the company said. The mine will start reaching the design capacity after launching the third stage, planned to be reached in 2027.

Rusal initiated construction of the Cheremukhovskaya - Glubokaya mine eleven years ago. The first stage was launched in April 2015. The second stage was commissioned in January 2017 and bauxite mining started. The shaft depth is 1.5 km. The shaft is the deepest in Russia and is among top five deepest mines across the globe. 463,600 tonnes of bauxite ore were mined there as of 2018 year-end.

Rusal is the largest aluminum producer outside China and the only primary aluminum producer in Russia. In 2018, the company produced 3.753 mln tonnes of aluminum, an increase of 1.3% compared with 2017. Meanwhile, sales dropped by 7.2% in the period to 3.671 mln tonnes.

Rusal exported more than 80% of its products before US sanctions were slapped. Restrictions were lifted on January 27 Washington time (January 28 Moscow time).
