Russian nuclear-powered container ship sets off for 1st voyage with Arctic LNG cargo

The Sevmorput will deliver the output of Russian enterprises - pipes, metal frameworks, containers and building machinery

ARKHANGELSK, March 21. /TASS/. The nuclear-powered container ship Sevmorput has departed from the port of Arkhangelsk in north Russia to embark on its first voyage to deliver cargo for the Arctic LNG-2 (Liquefied Natural Gas-2) project, the press office of the Rosatomflot nuclear-powered fleet operator said on Thursday.

"On March 21, the nuclear-powered container ship Sevmorput left the sea port of Arkhangelsk towards the Gydan Peninsula. There are over 25,000 freight items of heterogeneous general cargo for the Arctic LNG-2 project," the statement says.

The Sevmorput will deliver the output of Russian enterprises - pipes, metal frameworks, containers and building machinery.

"The transition from Arkhangelsk to the Utrenneye deposit in the Gulf of Ob will take no more than five days," the press office quoted Sevmorput Captain Farid Gabbasov as saying.

"There is a great lot of cargo and it is quite voluminous," the captain said.

After the works at the Utrenneye deposit are over, the vessel will return to Arkhangelsk for the second batch of cargoes for the project.

The Sevmorput is an ice-class transportation vessel more than 260 meters long equipped with a nuclear propulsion unit. The ship was launched into operation in the late 1980s. In the mid-2010s, the Sevmorput underwent its upgrade.

The Arctic LNG-2 project stipulates the construction of three facilities for the production of liquefied natural gas with a capacity of 6.6 million tonnes a year each, using the gravity-based structure platforms. As of December 1, 2018, the deposit’s reserves were estimated at 1.978 trillion cubic meters of natural gas and 105 million tonnes of liquid hydrocarbons according to Russia’s classification.

Arctic LNG-2 LLC holds the license for the export of liquefied natural gas.
