Wind farm in Yakutia passes Arctic winter test

The wind farm offers reliable energy supplies and allows saving diesel fuel, which the settlement has to buy in summer

YAKUTSK, March 12. /TASS/. Four months of the wind farm’s work in northern Yakutia’s Tiksi proved the equipment is effective in extremely low temperatures, Russia’s hydroelectricity company, RusHydro, told reporters on Tuesday.

The wind farm of Komaihaltec’s three wind turbines with the capacity of 900 kW was launched in November, 2018. Presently, the wind farm works in the settlement along with the local diesel electric plant.

"The wind farm, made by RusHydro jointly with the Japanese counterparts in the Arctic settlement of Tiksi, has demonstrated high effectiveness and reliability in the severe Arctic climate conditions," the company’s press service said. "In winter 2018-2019, air temperatures in Tiksi dropped as low as minus 42 degrees with winds of up to 30 mps, and the windfarm continued working smoothly."

TASS wrote earlier, the new wind farm produces energy for Yakutia’s isolated Tiksi settlement, were more than 4,600 people live. The wind farm offers reliable energy supplies and allows saving diesel fuel, which the settlement has to buy in summer. According to the company, every year Tiksi will save up to 500 tonnes of diesel fuel.

The project began in September, 2017, when RusHydro, Yakutia’s government, Japan’s government and Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) agreed construction of the wind farm in Tiksi.
