Murmansk Region steps up fish export

Last year, 96% of the total amount was exported to the EU countries and China

MURMANSK, February 27. /TASS/. The Murmansk Region’s fish industry in 2018 stepped up fish export by 2.5% to 190,000 tonnes and added new items to the export product line, press service of the local agricultural authority said.

"In 2018, more than 190,000 tonnes of sea products were exported from Russia, where the year-on-year growth made 2.5%," the press service said.

The biggest share - more than 182,000 tonnes, or 96% - was exported to the EU countries and China. Besides, fish products are exported to Norway, Japan, the US, Nigeria, and from 2018 also to Iceland and South Korea.

Traditionally exported are cod, haddock, perch, halibut and their processed products. From 2018, Russia exports also cod stomachs, fish skin and bones. In 2018, began export shipments to Japan of live sea urchin from the Barents Sea. The region sent the total of four consignments of almost 4.5 tonnes of live sea urchin, as well as almost 10 tonnes of sea urchins caviar.

According to the authority, in 2018, Japan certified one vessel, which produced sea urchin. In 2019, the Murmansk Region’s two costal facilities processing sea urchin were certified.
