MOSCOW, February 21. /TASS/. Construction of a port on Kamchatka to serve cargo transported along the Northern Sea Route will be a part of an Arctic transport line, which unites Russian ports with ports in Asia, Europe and North America, Director General of Russia’s Corporation for Kamchatka’s Development Nikolai Pegin told an international conference in Moscow on Thursday.
Earlier, the Leningrad Region and Kamchatka agreed to organize a terminal for handling containers, transported along the Northern Sea Route. The terminal will be built in the Avacha Bay.
"By organizing [on Kamchatka] of a hub port with regular cargo lines, the [NSR] ports’ turnover will grow up, the ports will get integrated into an Arctic transport line to ports of the Asia-Pacific Region, Europe and Northern America," he said.
The choice of the Avacha Bay is reasonable, he continued. The bay will be the most high-latitudinal unfreezing port on the Northern Sea Route, which will serve vessels year round. Thus, the expert said, the port will make NSR a part of the Arctic transport line.
Earlier, the Leningrad Region’s Governor Alexander Drozdenko said the region negotiated new options to deliver containers from Asia along the Northern Sea Route, so that to transport them further on via the port of Rostock to Europe’s other port terminals.
The sea terminal in Kamchatka’s Avacha Bay will make easier reloading of cargo from heavy ice-class vessels onto lighter vessels to supply products to the Asia-Pacific Region.
