Russia and Ukraine to hold ministerial meeting on gas transit in May

The two countries had confirmed their interest in the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine after the expiration of the current contract in 2019

MOSCOW, January 21. /TASS/. Russia and Ukraine agreed to hold ministerial consultations on gas transit through Ukraine in May, Russia’s Energy Minister Alexander Novak said in an interview with the Rossiya 24 TV channel following the trilateral talks between Russia, the EU and Ukraine in Brussels. The countries will also continue working at the expert level, he added.

"We have agreed that in May we will hold the next meeting at the ministerial level so that by this time the experts are to work out the details of the future contract (on gas transit through Ukraine after 2019 - TASS)," Novak said.

The Russian official also said that the two countries had confirmed their interest in the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine after the expiration of the current contract in 2019.

"One of the areas that discussed today is the transit [of Russian gas] through Ukraine [after 2019.]. Once again, the interest of both Russia and Ukraine in ensuring such transit has been confirmed," Novak said.

The transit of Russian gas is an important source of revenues for the budget of Ukraine. If the transit is terminated, the EU may have to significantly increase in macro-financial assistance to Ukraine.

In February 2018, President Vladimir Putin declared that Russia was ready to continue gas supplies through Ukraine, if they are economically feasible.

In January of this year, Putin once again confirmed this intention, noting that Russia is ready to fully load both the Nord Stream and the Turkish Stream pipelines. At the same time the possibilities for maintaining transit through Ukraine will remain, he added.

The contracts Gazprom and Naftogaz signed in 2009 (both on gas supplies to Ukraine and on gas transit to Europe) expire at the end of 2019.

The future of gas transit through Ukraine is also being discussed in the context of the construction of the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline, which has already begun, and which bypasses the transit countries.
