Gas contract with Russia is of strategic importance for Serbia, says President Vucic

The president recalled that the signed agreement includes not only the construction of a gas pipeline through Serbia, but also the expansion of a gas storage facility to 750 mln cubic meters

BELGRADE, January 18. /TASS/. The agreement between Russia and Serbia on the continuation of the TurkStream gas pipeline through the Serbian territory, as well as the expansion of the gas terminal, are of strategic importance for Belgrade, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said on Friday.

He said this during his the address to the nation on the results of his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin

"The gas contract is of strategic importance for Serbia," Vucic said.

The president recalled that the signed agreement includes not only the construction of a gas pipeline through Serbia, but also the expansion of a gas storage facility to 750 mln cubic meters. "This will make the territory of our country much more valuable, we will also satisfy the needs of our country in gas," he said.

Earlier, in an interview with the Rossiya-1 TV channel Miller said that the construction of infrastructure for the TurkStream in Serbia will begin soon.

On Thursday, responding to a question from TASS at a joint press conference with President Vucic, President Vladimri Putin said that Russia was ready to invest about $1.4 bln in infrastructure development in Serbia to lay the stretch of the TurkStream through that country.

The TurkStream project includes construction of a gas pipeline under the Black Sea to the European part of Turkey and further to the border with Greece. The first line will be designed to supply the Turkish market, the second - for gas supply to the countries of South and Southeast Europe. Gazprom considers Greece, Italy, Bulgaria, Serbia and Hungary as potential markets.
