Facebook, Twitter meet deadline for providing data on localizing Russian users' data

Under the law on personal data, national and foreign companies are obliged to store Russian users' data on Russian servers

MOSCOW, January 18. /TASS/. Facebook and Twitter have met the January 17 deadline for providing information about localizing Russian user data, the Russian media watchdog [Roskomnadzor] said in a statement on Friday.

"On January 17, Roskomnadzor received responses from Facebook and Twitter," the statement reads.

"A month ago, we requested the two companies to provide information about their steps to move Russian user data to servers located in Russia. Today, we will assess the information we received and announce our future actions on Monday," the watchdog added.

Under the Russian law on personal data, which took effect on September 1, 2015, national and foreign companies are obliged to store Russian user data on Russian servers. The media watchdog’s chief Alexander Zharov said earlier that Facebook and Twitter were expected to provide legally relevant responses to the watchdog’s request.
