Kola MMC invests 120 million rubles in electrical substation's upgrade

The Kola Mining and Metallurgical Company finalized reconstruction and upgrade of its electrical substation

MURMANSK, January 17. /TASS/. The Kola Mining and Metallurgical Company (Kola MMC, a part of Nornickel) finalized reconstruction and upgrade of its electrical substation, which supplies electricity to the nickel electrolysis shop’s departments. According to the company’s press service, the investments, Kola MMC invested 120 million rubles ($1.8 million) in the project.

"Work on the substation continued for about 18 months," the press service said on Thursday, adding the investments made 120 million rubles.

The new distributing facility meets all modern production and safety requirements. The upgraded substation will offer reliable electricity supplies to the nickel electrolysis shop’s electrolysis department, where the company implements a new technology for producing nickel with use of chlorine.

The Kola Mining and Metallurgical Company is a leading production complex in the Murmansk Region - a major producer of non-ferrous metals, including strategic metals. The company is the world’s biggest nickel refining enterprise and Russia’s only producer of electrolytic cobalt of highest grades. The Kola MMC accounts for 39% of nickel and 42% of cobalt the Norilsk Nickel Company produces. The products are supplied to the domestic market and exported to European countries. Nickel is a basic component of most super alloys - heat-resistant materials, used in the aerospace industry for power machines’ parts. The Murmansk Region has a biggest in Russia deposit of nickel ores.
