Russia sure EU’s next summit will approve extension of anti-Russian sanctions

The summit is due to be held on December 13-14

MOSCOW, December 10. /TASS/. Russia is sure that the next European Union summit later this week will approve further extension of the anti-Russian sanctions expiring on January 31, 2019, Russian Permanent Representative to the European Union Vladimir Chizhov said on Monday.

"Obviously, the European Union summit due to be held later this week, on December 13-14, will confirm the decision concerning the sanctions, which are expiring in January," he said in an interview with the Rossiya-24 television channel.

Following the developments in Ukraine and Crimea’s reunification with Russia in 2014, the European Union imposed a package of anti-Russian sanctions and suspended talks on visa-free travel and a new framework agreement on cooperation. It banned a number of Russian officials from entering the European Union and froze their assets. Apart from that, trade, financial and military restrictions were introduced. The sanctions have been extended and expanded more than once. The current package of economic sanctions expires on January 31, 2019.
