About 5,000 tonnes of scrap metal shipped from Chukotka’s Pevek

According to the city administration, last year, the two companies collected and transported twice less

TASS, November 21. About 5,000 tonnes of scrap metal were collected and taken along the Northern Sea Route from Chukotka’s Pevek to Arkhangelsk in 2018, the city administration told TASS on Wednesday.

"This year [2018], two companies continued collecting scrap metal in Pevek, which had remained there since the Soviet times," the administration said. "They have collected in the city and its suburbs about 5,000 tonnes of metal and sent it for further processing along the Northern Sea Route to Arkhangelsk."

"Last year, they collected and transported twice less," the administration added.

The cleaning works will continue in 2019, between mid-May and late October - during the local navigation - to take containers with scrap metal to Arkhangelsk for further processing there. As the sea navigation stops, collecting of scrap metal stops till next year. In 2018, the two companies cleared the local roads, the road to the airport, and the sea shores.

TASS wrote earlier, referring to Chukotka’s Governor Roman Kopin, the regional government planned to continue the work for three-five years. The scrap metal would be stored at big ports - Anadyr and Pevek, and later on it will be shipped outside the region for further processing.

Pevek is Russia’s northernmost city, with the population of about 5,000 people.
