OPCW turns down Russia’s, Iran’s initiatives against increasing its budget

Only about a fourth of the countries voted in favor of it

THE HAGUE, November 20. /TASS/. The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) on Tuesday turned down Russia’s and Iran’s initiatives aimed against increasing the organization’s budget.

A total of 113 countries took part in voting at the 23rd conference of member nations of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC). Twenty-seven voted in favor of the initiative while 86 said no.

Russia and Iran insisted any mention of the so-called attributive mechanism vested with the right to identify those to blame for the use of chemical weapons be crossed out of the draft resolution on the budget. They also insisted on the initial budget of 67.2 million euro proposed by the OPCW Secretariat on July 6.

Another proposal, initiated by Western nations, was to increase the organization’s budget by 2.4 million euro, with extra funds be channeled to finance the attributive mechanism.
