Maduro banks on Russia’s support to bolster Venezuela’s economic independence

Maduro met with Russia's deputy finance minister and a group of economic advisers

MOSCOW, October 31. /TASS/. Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro hopes that Russia would help his country to become more economically independent, the president said after a meeting with the Russian delegation led by Deputy Finance Minister Sergei Storchak.

"[I’m having] an emergency working meeting with the deputy finance chief and a group of economic advisers from the Russian Federation. We are discussing measures that would help us to boost the new production model and strengthen economic independence," Maduro wrote in a Twitter post.

The meeting was also attended by officials from the Russian Central Bank and other agencies.

Over the past few years, Venezuela has experienced a serious social and economic crisis, accompanied by the devaluation of the local currency, shortages of food and medicines and hyperinflation.
