Nornickel invests $29 million in new landfill near Norilsk

Currently, all the waste is brought to two landfills, which are 70-80% full

KRASNOYARSK, May 14. /TASS/. A waste landfill will be built in Norilsk in 2018-2020, press service of Nornickel’s Polar Branch said on Monday.

Currently, all the waste is brought to two landfills, which are 70-80% full.

"Nornickel’s Polar Branch has begun construction works to build a landfill for the waste from its industrial enterprises," the press service said. "The landfill will take an area of 45 hectares. It will replace the tailings storage of the Nadezhdinsky metallurgical plant - 1.7 km from the road between Norilsk and Alykel."

"The company invests in the project 1.8 billion rubles ($29 million)," the press service added.

The new facility will be used for industrial waste of II-IV classes and for municipal waste. The landfill’s capacity will be 300,000 tonnes a year. The term is 30 years.

In order to stop polluted water from getting into the soil, the landfill’s entire area will be fenced by a special dam, and its bottom will be lined with a special geotextile membrane. The landfill will have a system of collecting and purifying the polluted water - it unites canals, basins and local purifying facilities.
