Chukotka’s authorities change winter routes due to global warming

Warm winters in Chukotka made the local authorities change winter routes

TASS, April 24. The untypically warm winters in Chukotka make the local authorities change routes of the winter roads, used for food and fuel supplies. The local government has to adjust at least two roads, the region’s Deputy Governor Leonid Nikolayev said on Tuesday.

"In the relatively warm winters, we can use for much shorter time the winter roads, which we have been using," he said. "In particular, those are the road across the Anadyr Estuary to the airport and the road from Pevek to Bilibino, and thus next winter we shall make new routes."

At the same time, the officials consider an additional route across the estuary so that to begin using it earlier than usually - in early winter.

The winter road, which begins from Anadyr and continues to the eighth berth is 5.3 km long. The new route will triple the distance - to 15 km. However, when the ice thickness allows, the region will continue using the old road.

The road in western Chukotka - from the country’s northernmost city Pevek to Bilibino also may become longer. This route is used mostly for industrial cargo and for of food products’ deliveries.
