VLADIVOSTOK, April 1. /TASS/. The flagship of the Russian Pacific Fleet, the Guards Missile Cruiser Varyag, left the fleet’s main naval base in Vladivostok on Saturday for a long ocean voyage, the fleet’s spokesman, Navy Captain 2nd Rank Vladimir Matveyev, said.
"The voyage of the Pacific Fleet flagship is proceeding in accordance with the Russian armed forces’ international cooperation plan and will last more than two months," he said.
According to Matveyev," during the long ocean voyage, the ship will pay seven unofficial and business visits to foreign ports." "The main objective of the voyage is demonstration of the Russian Navy’s St. Andrew’s flag in the Asia-Pacific region and further development of military and naval cooperation with the countries in that region," the spokesman said.
