WASHINGTON, November 7. /TASS/. The US Navy has decided to suspend production of guided precision projectiles for the guns mounted on its newest Zumwalt-class (DDG-1000) warships.
As reported by Defense News, which quotes an unnamed source in the US Navy, the reason for the move is the excessive cost of the projectiles, up to $800,000 per round. The cost has risen due to the US authorities' decision to cut the number of orders for Zumwalts from the initial 28 to three.
The lead destroyer vessel, Zumwalt, was commissioned on October 15 in Baltimore, Maryland, and up to 10,000 people gathered back then to see the futuristic ship.
