ST. PETERSBURG, April 4. /TASS/. Russia’s Western Military District plans to draft about 52,000 recruits for service during the spring campaign, District Deputy Commander for Organizational and Mobilization Work Eduard Nefyodov said on Monday.

"The standard requirement for the Western Military District is about 52,000 recruits," he told a news conference in TASS’ press center in St. Petersburg.

There are plans to draft about 3,200 recruits from St. Petersburg and around 1,600 persons from the Leningrad Region in northwest Russia for military service, he said.

During the autumn campaign, a total of about 45,000 recruits were drafted, he added.

"Most draftees will serve either at the places of their residence or in neighboring regions but it is not ruled out that they may be sent to distant units in the district," the deputy commander said.

St. Petersburg Chief Enlistment Officer Sergei Kachkovsky said at a session of the city’s government that the regular spring campaign would be held on April 1-15.

The city’s draft requirement is 3,220 recruits, with the first group to be sent to troops on April 20, he added.
