MOSCOW, March 31. /TASS/. Some 2,500 troops are involved in the active phase of a field firing exercise in Sakhalin, spokesman for the Russian Eastern Military District Alexander Gordeyev said on Thursday.

"T-72B3 tanks, BM-21 Grad multiple launch rocket systems, Mi-8AMTSh helicopters, units of the engineer troops, electronic warfare troops and radiological, chemical and biological defense forces are involved in the Sakhalin drills," Gordeyev said. He added that a total of about 500 units of weapons and military equipment and more than 10 aircraft are engaged in the maneuvers.

According to the official, at the Taranai range the military drill coastal counter-landing assault, and at the Uspenovsky training complex motorized infantry troops with support of artillery and army aviation helicopters drill a mission to block and destroy a major "illegal armed group."
