Russian military adviser killed in Syria recommended for state decoration — ministry

MOSCOW, February 3. /TASS/. A Russian military adviser killed in Syria has been recommended for a state decoration, the Russian Defense Ministry reported Wednesday.

"The Russian military adviser in Syria was fulfilling tasks to render assistance to the Syrian army in mastering new armaments supplied within the framework of current interstate military-technical cooperation contracts," the ministry said.

On February 1, the Islamic State terrorist group shelled a military garrison where a Syrian army formation is deployed from mortars. The officer was fatally wounded. He was recommended for the state decoration posthumously.

Russia’s Aerospace Force started delivering pinpoint strikes in Syria at facilities of the Islamic State and Jabhat al-Nusra terrorist organizations, which are banned in Russia, on September 30, 2015, on a request from Syrian President Bashar Assad.

Russia’s aircraft have made thousands of sorties since the start of the operation in Syria.
