Russian military police escort UN humanitarian convoy out of Rukban refugee camp

More than 100 trucks, which made part of the convoy that arrived in the camp on February 6, left the 55 kilometer wide security zone in Al-Tanf

DAMASCUS, February 14. /TASS/. Russian military police officers have ensured the safety of an aid convoy of the United Nations and the Syrian Arab Red Crescent on its way to Damascus from the Rukban refugee camp, head of the Russian Center for Reconciliation of the Opposing Sides in Syria Lieutenant General Sergei Solomatin said.

On Thursday, more than 100 trucks, which made part of the UN and SARC aid convoy that arrived in the camp on February 6, left the 55 kilometer wide security zone in Al-Tanf. Russian military servicemen escorted the first 60 trucks to the Syrian capital on February 10.

"It required much time and effort to make preparations for the humanitarian mission. Officers from the Center for Reconciliation and military police officers fully implemented their obligations to ensure the convoy’s safety," Solomatin said.

According to the United Nations and SARC, food, warm clothing, sleeping bags and blankets for 40,000 people were delivered to the Rukban camp. Doctors from humanitarian organizations provided hepatitis, measles and polio vaccinations to children.

On February 6, Russian military police escorted the second United Nations humanitarian aid convoy to the Rukban refugee camp. The convoy consisted of more than 160 trucks, ambulances, fuel vehicles and armored vehicles. A total of 1,080 tonnes of food, non-food items, medicines and basic necessities were delivered to refugees.
