Production of Kalashnikov guns to be launched in India in 2019

The sides also discussed the organization of production of Ka-226T helicopters in India

NEW DELHI, December 13. /TASS/. It is planned to begin mass production of Kalashnikov submachine guns in India in 2019, Russian Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Fomin said on Thursday after a meeting of the Russian-Indian intergovernmental commission on military technical cooperation.

"We discussed a draft program of for military technical cooperation till the year 2030, the organization of production of Ka-226T helicopters in India," he said. "We also considered in detail steps to launch the production of Kalashnikov submachine guns in India in 2019."

"Close attention was focused on the quality of post-sale servicing," he went on to say. "An agreement was signed on the establishment of a Russian-Indian intergovernmental commission on military and military technical cooperation to complete the restructuring of the intergovernmental commission to make it possible to establish closer cooperation in the defense sphere."

Today’s meeting was co-chaired by the two countries’ defense ministers, Sergei Shoigu of Russia and Nirmala Sitharaman of India.

India’s army has repeatedly said it needs state-of-the-art automatic weapons.
