UK diplomats, Northern Fleet honor fallen WW2 aviators

Following the wreath-laying ceremony at the Northern Fleet’s cemetery, a similar event took place in the Arctic port city of Murmansk

MOSCOW, November 13. /TASS/. The Northern Fleet crew and diplomats from the United Kingdom have paid homage to fighter pilots killed during the Second World War. The commemorations took place at the military memorial cemetery of the Northern Fleet’s main base on Tuesday, its press service reported.

"Today the wreath-and flower-laying ceremony at the tombs of Russian, English and Canadian airmen, who died on the Kola Peninsula defending the Soviet polar region from the Nazis during World War 2, took place at the military memorial cemetery of the Northern Fleet’s main base in the city of Severomorsk. Northern Fleet commanders and the diplomatic delegation led by Deputy Head of Mission in the British Embassy in Moscow, Lindsay Samantha Skoll," according to the statement.

Apart from navy personnel and diplomats, the servicemen of the North Sea garrison and the North Sea club of the young sailors also participated in the event. Following the wreath-laying ceremony at the Northern Fleet’s cemetery, a similar event took place in the Arctic port city of Murmansk.

British diplomats have come to the Northern Fleet as part of the annual commemoration of Remembrance Day that falls on November 11 and honors the memory of those killed on the battlefield. Such commemorations have become a regular occasion since 1995.
