Russian scientist Temirev denies high treason charges — lawyer

The 64-year-old scientist faces up to 20 years in prison if found guilty

MOSCOW, August 21. /TASS/. Alexei Temirev, a scientist from the southern Russian city of Novocherkassk, denies high treason charges laid against him, his lawyer Anna Polozova told TASS on Tuesday.

"My defendant denies the charges laid against him," the lawyer said.

She gave no further details on the nature of charges, because case files have been classified.

On July 19, Moscow’s Lefortovo Court ruled to place Temirev in custody for two months on high treason charges. The details of the case were not disclosed. On Tuesday, the Moscow City Court confirmed the legitimacy of the arrest.

The 64-year-old scientist faces up to 20 years in prison if found guilty. According to open-access sources, he heads a small innovative enterprise, Mekhatronika (‘Mechatronics’), and is also a founder of the Intellectual Robust Integrated Systems design bureau. Temirev has registered several patents, including for equipment used by surface ships and submarines.
