Russia in talks with Philippines on conventional submarines’ delivery

The format of further work with the Philippines is also being discussed

KUBINKA /Moscow Region/, August 21. /TASS/. Russia and the Philippines are holding negotiations on cooperation, including the delivery of Project 636 conventional submarines, CEO of Russia’s state arms seller Rosoboronexport Alexander Mikheyev told TASS on Tuesday.

"We are holding talks not only on this [submarines]. In general, we are now discussing the format of further work with the Philippines," the chief executive said, replying to a question from TASS on the negotiations on Project 636 submarines.

Project 636 submarines are considered to be the most noiseless from among Russian conventional subs. They have been dubbed the Black Hole for their unique quietness. They are furnished with modern radar and communications systems, the sonar, 533mm torpedoes and Kalibr cruise missiles.

Over the past few years, the Russian Navy has received six Project 636.3 diesel-electric submarines built by the Admiralty Shipyard for the Black Sea Fleet. The submarine Krasnodar from this series successfully live-fired Kalibr cruise missiles from the Mediterranean Sea against terrorists’ ground objectives in Syria in May and June 2017.
