Russia, Japan outline areas of further defense cooperation

MOSCOW, July 31. /TASS/. Areas for further cooperation between Russia and Japan in the defense sphere were outlined by the two countries’ foreign and defense ministers, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said on Tuesday after talks in the 2+2 format.

"Both during our bilateral meeting with my Japanese counterpart, Mr. Onodera, and during the consultations with the participation of the foreign ministers, we exchanged views on issue of military security of the states and outlines areas for further cooperation in the defense sphere," he said.

Russia-Japan cooperation 

Russia and Japan have agreed to hold bilateral expert consultations on security issues before the yearend, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Tuesday after a 2+2 meeting of the Russian and Japanese foreign and defense ministers.

"We highly assessed the Russian-Japanese cooperation in countering the new challenges and threats and agreed to continue cooperation in the framework of the project for training drug police for Afghanistan and Central Asian states at the Russian interior ministry’s institute in Domodedovo. The project is being successfully implemented by our countries along with the United Nations. We reiterated our commitment to cooperation in the areas of fighting terrorism, ensuring international information security and counteracting corruption," he said.

"We agreed to organize bilateral expert consultations on these topics before the yearend," he said, adding that Russia will support Japan's security initiatives within the Group of Twenty when Tokyo take over presidency next year.
