Syrian army mopping up terrorists in Damascus’s Yarmouk district

More than 65% of this suburb of Damascus is under the authorities’ control, according to the Russian Defense Ministry

MOSCOW, May 4. /TASS/. The Syrian army is about to complete the defeat of terrorists in Yarmouk. More than 65% of this suburb of Damascus is under the authorities’ control, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Major-General Igor Konashenkov told the media on Friday.

"At the moment the groups of the Islamic State (outlawed in Russia) in the western part of Yarmouk are split and their piecemeal defeat is about to be completed. Government troops control more than 65% of the suburb’s territory," Konashenkov said.

Over the past six years the area has been a citadel of Islamic State terrorists, who migrated there after the defeat of armed gangs in different parts of Syria.

"When the operation is over, the Syrian capital will be completely free from armed groups," Konashenkov said.
