Russia may exchange businessman Viktor Bout for convicted US spy

Russian authorities may consider exchanging convicted US spy Valery Mikhailov for Viktor Bout or Konstantin Yaroshenko, Kommersant newspaper reports on Thursday

The United States may want to exchange convicted Russian businessman Viktor Bout for retired Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) Colonel Valery Mikhailov. That’s according to the Russian newspaper Kommersant. Mikhailov was convicted in Moscow on Wednesday and got an 18-year term at a high-security prison on charges of spying for Washington. Vikor Bout was sentenced to 25 years behind bars after found guilty of conspiring to sell weapons to the Colombian armed opposition group FARC, which is considered a terrorist organization by the American government. Meanwhile, Bout is being transferred to Illinois where he will serve sentence in the US penitentiary Marion, according to his lawyer.US authorities may also consider exchanging Mikhailov for Konstantin Yaroshenko, Russian pilot given a 20-year prison sentence in New York for conspiring to smuggle a large shipment of cocaine into the US.
