MOSCOW, July 20 (Itar-Tass) - The delayed departure of two transport planes for Sakhalin when a surprise combat readiness exercise was announced in the Eastern Military District merely confirmed the feasibility of such unexpected checks, a member of the Defense Ministry’s Public Council, Igor Korotchenko, told the media on Friday.

“It goes without saying that such comprehensive checks cannot be ideally smooth. Also, one should acknowledge that the departure of transport planes for Sakhalin after a ten-hour delay - so frequently mentioned in the mass media - merely confirms how unexpected the exercise really was,” Korotchenko said at the Public Council’s meeting on Friday.

He described the armed forces as an integral, fine-tuned machinery that guaranteed the country’s integrity.

“The Armed Forces and the Navy are in the process of regaining the status of a key institution of the state. This allows for lifting many questions and doubts over the feasibility of heavy budget spending on the country’s defenses and security,” Korotchenko said.
